IFCA Critic of the Year 2025 - Brian Eggert

Brian Eggert Named IFCA’s 2024 Critic of the Year

By Brenda Harvieux | March 14, 2025

The Independent Film Critics of America (IFCA) has named Deep Focus Review’s critic and founder, Brian Eggert, as 2024’s recipient of the Critic of the Year award.

“We are overjoyed to recognize Brian’s exceptional talent with this well-deserved award,” wrote the IFCA board in their announcement. The board includes Chairman Byron Lafayette and members Scott Menzel, Joe Leydon, and JD Duran.

The IFCA brings together members from the independent film critic community, forming an organization that aims to unite critics with diverse experiences and backgrounds, all connected by their deep passion for cinema and film analysis.

Founded by film critic, journalist, and author Byron Lafayette, the IFCA emerged from his belief that diverse backgrounds and perspectives enhance the richness of film criticism. Since most independent critic organizations are concentrated in particular cities and states, Lafayette established the IFCA as a national association.

The IFCA’s members voted on the “Critic of the Year” late last year, selecting Brian as the recipient.

“Brian Eggert, a distinguished Tomatometer-approved film critic, is the mastermind behind Deep Focus Review,” wrote the board. “Since 2007, he has been captivating readers with his insightful movie reviews, thought-provoking essays, comprehensive histories, and incisive critical analyses. His cinematic palate spans a wide spectrum, from the works of Andrei Tarkovsky to the quirky charm of Psycho Goreman.”

As the editor of Deep Focus Review, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Brian and seeing firsthand the depth of thought, passion, and dedication he brings to his craft. His work is not just about reviewing movies; it’s about shaping the way we appreciate film as an art form by going deeper and analyzing films through various lenses—historical, cultural, thematic, technical, and theoretical. Whether he’s exploring universal themes in an international film, investigating the historical context of a World War II Hollywood thriller, analyzing the cultural significance of an auteur masterpiece, or celebrating an indie horror gem, his writing enriches the way we experience cinema.

Brian’s background in film studies, art history, and literary analysis further informs his approach, elevating his work beyond traditional reviews into in-depth film criticism. Brian holds a Master’s degree in Film Studies and is committed to research, critical analysis, and writing about cinema. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor. His ability to weave film history, cultural context, filmmaking techniques, and critical insight into his work is what makes Deep Focus Review such an important resource.

This award is a testament to his incredible contributions to film criticism. Congratulations to Brian on becoming the IFCA’s 2024 Critic of the Year!
